Setting rates

Your rates for inflation, appreciation, and returns on your accounts play an important role in shaping your long-term financial outlook. Our enhanced model builds on our existing approach to provide greater clarity, accuracy and flexibility.

To use this enhanced modeling capability, login to your Planner, go to Member Settings in the top right hand corner, and toggle on “Beta.”

You now have three options for setting rates. You can:

  • Apply one of Boldin’s historically-derived default rates

  • Set a custom average or pessimistic/optimistic rate

Applying Boldin’s default rates

Boldin's default rates are based on historical data.

Setting custom rates

Custom rates let you enter your own average rate, or your own optimistic and pessimistic rates, if you have a specific assumption you want to use.

When you enter your own optimistic and pessimistic rates, we'll create the average rate using a linear calculation.

When you enter your own average rate, we'll create an optimistic rate (20% higher than your average) and pessimistic rate (20% lower than your average).

For example, if the average rate is 6%, we’ll add 20% of 6 (1.2), to the optimistic rate to calculate your optimistic rate of 7.2% (6% × 1.2), and we’ll subtract that same 20% of 6 (1.2) to calculate your pessimistic rate of 4.8%.
